BLCOHOL

The Food Flogger Review—BLCOHOL, “Beyond Alcohol”

Only steps away from Xujiahui’s grand overpass, BLCOHOL occupies an enviable position, one that, despite being in the center of Xujiahui, somehow still gives off a feeling of intimacy and seclusion.

As a relatively new resident in the area, this seven-month-old restaurant has already won over the hearts and tastebuds of its many customers with its bold menu offerings, use of fresh seasonal ingredients, innovative cooking techniques, and its uniquely crafted flavors and dishes. Receiving one of the top restaurant ratings in the area, “surprising” is the first word you’ll come across when looking up comments on social media. And given its distinctive approach and the variety of its dishes, it’s easy to see why. Forming an interesting symphony of Asian and Western flavorings, BLCOHOL is a “fusion” bistro at its core. Though the concept has fallen out of favor with many, BLCOHOL effectively reinvigorates the term when it comes to its ability to fuse together key, cultural ingredients in delightfully imaginative and innovative ways.

Along with its nuanced menu offerings, BLCOHOL offers a distinctive drink menu that focuses almost as much attention on its alcoholic beverages as it does on its food offerings. The unique name of the restaurant derives it origin from the combination of the words, “beyond alcohol.” Meant to suggest the strong relationship that ties together both food and drink, BLCOHOL’s menu offers budget friendly wines, handcrafted cocktails and some of the best and most unique craft beer selections you’re likely to find in the city, both of which have been crafted and curated by the owner and chef, Jiadong.

With madcap chef and owner Jiadong at the helm, we are going to see if BLCOHOL has what it takes to receive the Food Flogger stamp of approval. Come on, let’s go check it out.
